When you create a new website, how long does it take to show up in Google's search results? Are there things you can do to speed up the process?

It's not uncommon for at least a homepage to be indexed in a matter of hours or even less with links from an established site. For a full crawl it can sometimes take a few days or longer for much larger sites.

Most websites will show up pretty quickly in Google's index, but there are a few caveats:
It's possible that Google will 'sandbox' your website, meaning they keep it out of the index until it establishes a bit of credibility.

A few things you can do to get your site indexed quickly:

Set up Google's Webmaster Tool and submit your sitemap/RSS feed

Submit an article or two to Digg or StumbleUpon.

Create a Twitter account and link to the new site.

Create a Facebook Fan Page and link back to the site.

While none of these things will give you any PageRank, they will get the GoogleBot to visit your site and hopefully get you into the index quickly.

But one thing nobody has mentioned yet: Make sure you have sufficient interesting and unique content. Even if the Google bot visits your page – whether because you submitted your URL the usual way, or your sitemap via Webmaster Tools, or because it came across a link to your site elsewhere – if it finds very little of value at your site it may simply choose to not include you in the index. I've read that Google likes content it hasn't seen before.
