I've noticed plenty of seemingly successful websites and blogs that had pretty awful looking designs. I've also seen some unsuccessful websites with really good designs.

Does the quality of design of a website really make a difference in that site's overall success?

In my opinion, it definitely makes a difference. Content is key but overall your site has to be accessible and eye-catching for visitors. I've avoided sites that may have great content but are hard on the eye.

I don't think the design needs to be AMAZING per se, but it has to be clean and easy to access and something that encourages visitors to come back and explore more. A site that is badly designed will have more work to do in content to get visitors hooked.

I think the 'halo effect' applies here - If someone views one trait about you to be good, then they assume that other traits about you are equally good. So if your website looks good, they'll assume the content and your products will good as well.

It indeed makes the difference (design, that is). Like Mandy and Nate already said, content is the king but make no mistake about it; clear and well designed graphical layout is really important as well.

One story comes in mind. While this is more of a usability thing, it's a design element nevertheless: 300 million button.

There are two main issues with a site's design. One is the user interface. Does the design allow visitors to find what they're looking for with minimal friction? This sounds a lot easier than it really is. I've regularly had people tell me that their site "works" because they have subscribers or sales or whatever the metric for success happens to be. However, with a bad design, only those who are obsessive about the content will put in the effort to dig through a bad user interface. At the same time, people who might be interested in what you have to offer will never know because they won't be able to find it.

The other issue is branding. Are the visuals congruent with the message the site is trying to convey? There are a zillion considerations within this question. Is it a make or break issue? Maybe. Does it make a difference overall? Yes.

I think that it does make an impact on the success of a site. While great content is definitely the biggest key, a good design will catch the eye of visitors and the site might shine through all the clutter.
