As a part of expanding my business, I'm planning to offer a couple of online classes in the next year. I've been looking at a couple of different options for the infrastructure — setting up a special mailing list, using a forum — but I'm not seeing exactly what I want. What do those of you who run classes use to communicate with students while still keeping the information private?

You're looking for a infrasructure for a online course membership site? Did I understand right?

There are quite many alternatives here. I guess it really depends on the actual needs for features you have for this kind of "online course membership site".

Clay Collins from Project Mojave seem to use a software called aMemberProfessional with his membership courses (wordpress supported). aMember also supports many online payment systems (PayPal, ClickBank and many others). There's also quite many other plugins and information about how to turn your wordpress site into a membership site.

Have you tried Ning-social networks? It's a free alternative that might suit your needs (and you can make it "members only" with password protection).

That'll teach me to write a question when I'm tired... should be Infrastructure for Online Classes. I hadn't even thought of Ning, but now that you mention it, that might a good fit for what I have in mind. Thanks! – Thursday Bram Dec 9 at 22:32
